Innovative measuring techniques for extruder
bores

Worn barrels are a ticking time bomb about to affect product quality and
cause severe gearbox damage. Regular wear measurement carried out on the figure
of eight bores of KraussMaffei Berstorff twin-screw extruders is the perfect
solution to defuse this bomb. Using an endoscope combined with a special
measuring device for the barrel bore, the KraussMaffei Berstorff service team
rapidly and reliably detects the wear in the barrel bores and thus supplies
detailed information on the barrel condition at an early stage.
Until recently, it was necessary to
disassemble the entire processing section during longer shutdown periods in
order to precisely identify and localise the wear inside the extruder barrels.
Today, disassembly is no longer necessary: "With our special measuring
device assisted by rapid software, a complete wear check takes just a couple of
hours," says Adrian Mann, customer service representative at KraussMaffei
Berstorff. "Many of our customers benefit from this service within the
frame of preventive maintenance in order to avoid substantial gearbox damage,
product quality defects or reduction of output rates", he explains.
Precise
measuring method
The measuring device for the barrel housing
bore detects wear in the processing section by measuring the inside diameter of
each bore. The sensors measure the actual bore diameter over the entire
processing section length. During the measuring process the actual diameter of
the bore is measured every 5 mm and this procedure is carried out 3 times in
different positions in each of the 2 bores.
The result obtained is a
representation of the inside diameter in the form of six tracks (3 left, 3
right) and with an axial resolution of 5 mm. The degree of wear is then
calculated by the evaluation software on the basis of the individual diameter
values. In addition to production defects, wear measurement carried out at an
early stage helps to avoid damage to the extruder.
Additionally in order to precisely analyse the
condition of the material surface, the measuring head is equipped with an
endoscopic camera after the diameter has been measured. This camera provides
pin sharp images and videos of the surface condition of the figure of eight
bore. Finally a measurement of the screw elements completes the program. The
measuring results and the endoscopic findings are consequently combined to
provide a professional report comprising of a graphic representation of the
inside diameter, a description of the actual state of the checked barrel with
pictures as well as recommendations as to any further necessary actions.
